How to choose a catamaran charter Greece route
Greek waters give you five distinct sailing regions, each with its own character. The classic catamaran charter Greece week is built around one of them — but a two-week charter or a one-way crossing lets you stitch two together. Below is the short version: who each area suits, how the typical Saturday-to-Saturday week looks, and what to weigh up when you pick.
Whatever route you pick, the rhythm is similar: morning swim, midday sail riding the afternoon thermal (or the Meltemi in summer Cyclades), late-afternoon arrival in a sheltered cove or town quay, dinner ashore at a stone-walled taverna. Distances are short — most days are 12–25 NM, leaving plenty of time at anchor. Park-permit paperwork (Alonissos Marine Park) and Lefkas Canal toll are handled by our team when you book.
Cyclades — Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Milos
The marquee Greek catamaran destination. Charters depart from Athens (Alimos), Lavrion, Mykonos, or Paros and weave through the central or western Cyclades. Best for crews who want the iconic whitewashed villages, volcanic Santorini sunsets, and postcard beaches — with the trade-off that the Meltemi can blow 25–35 knots from the north in July and August. Catamarans handle it better than monohulls, and we pin lee anchorages on the south coast of each island. See the Cyclades sailing guide.
Ionian — Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos
Calmer, greener, more family-friendly than the Cyclades. Charters depart from Corfu (Gouvia Marina), Lefkada, or Preveza (Cleopatra Marina) and head south through Paxos, Antipaxos, Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and on to Zakynthos. No Meltemi — light SW thermals in the afternoon, glassy mornings. Best for first-timers, families with young children, and crews who want short hops between sheltered anchorages and stone-built tavernas. See the Ionian sailing guide.
Saronic Gulf — Aegina, Hydra, Spetses, Poros
The ideal short-sail week. Charters depart from Athens (Alimos) and stay within a 25 NM radius — Aegina pistachios, donkey-only Hydra, pine-fringed Spetses, lemon-scented Poros. Sheltered all summer, Meltemi rarely reaches here with force. Best for first-time skippers, weekend extensions, and groups arriving late on Saturday who don't want a long passage on Day 1. Easy to combine with a 14-day extension south to Sampatiki, Monemvasia, and Nafplio.
Dodecanese — Kos, Rhodes, Symi, Patmos, Astypalaia
South-east Aegean — where Greece edges Turkey. Charters depart from Kos or Rhodes (Mandraki) and loop through Symi's amphitheatre harbour, Kalymnos's sponge-diving heritage, Patmos's Byzantine monastery, Tilos and Nisyros's volcanic crater, plus Astypalaia for the more adventurous. Meltemi reaches here from late June. Best for crews who want history layered with sailing — Crusader walls, Roman ruins, Italian-era Lakki marina. See the Dodecanese sailing guide.
Sporades — Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Volos
Gentler waters and the only national marine park in Greece. Charters depart from Skiathos or Volos and wind through Skopelos coves, Alonissos Marine Park (mooring buoys only in marked zones), Kyra Panagia and Tzortzi Bay. Best for nature-focused crews, families, and skippers who want gentle conditions without the Cyclades crowds. The Pelion peninsula on the mainland adds Greek-village stops at Trikeri and Agia Kiriaki for one-way variants.
Picking a route — quick decision guide
First-time skipper or family with young kids? Saronic Gulf from Athens or Ionian from Lefkada — short hops, sheltered channels, plenty of quays and marinas if a weather window shifts plans.
Want the iconic Greek-island experience? Cyclades from Athens or Lavrion — Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos. Plan around Meltemi by starting early each day; we pin lee anchorages on every leg.
Two weeks and want maximum variety? Athens → Mykonos → Santorini → Paros or Lavrion → Mykonos → Santorini as one-way variants — Cyclades grand tour with the volcanic finale.
Avoid peak crowds and still want warm sailing? Sporades from Skiathos or Ionian shoulder season (May/June or September). 30–40% cheaper than Cyclades peak weeks and the islands stay blissfully uncrowded.
