Arriving early will help you to avoid the monastery's noon throngs.

Glide to Nisyros, where the ground still breaths. Trekking the Stefanos crater, its sulfur vents hissing underfoot, you meander around Mandraki's cobblestone paths surrounded by cobalt-domed churches. Then sip soumada (almond drink) beneath a village pergola after soaking in hot springs at Loutra. Local capers famed from volcanic soil are not missed!

St. John foretold the end of the world in the Cave of the Apocalypse; after you swim on the golden sands of Psili Ammos, you may descend into the cave. Savor mastiha cocktails as the sun sets in Chora's white maze, painting the sky a beautiful shade of pink. Peruse the patmian honey selection at the family-run Melisses, a hidden treasure in the area.

Fourteen nautical miles east from Tilos onto Chalki — the smallest inhabited Dodecanese island, fewer than 300 year-round residents, no cars allowed in the harbour village (donkey-trains still do the cobble work moving cargo from the quay to the village shops). Easy beam reach with the prevailing N wind. Stern-to in Emborios harbour (free, small — 12 boats max, get in before 16:00); the lazy lines are uneven, bring a stern anchor as backup. Open to NW swell, sheltered from meltemi. The Emborios waterfront is the photogenic line of pastel Italian-neoclassical townhouses from the 1930s occupation, restored in the 1980s under a UNESCO sustainable-tourism programme as the Aegean prototype. The Knights' Castle on the central peak is the sundown walk — 35 minutes uphill from the abandoned village of Chorio, the 14th-century Hospitaller fortress holds the panorama back across to the Turkish coast 30 nm east. Snorkel Pontamos Cove for the morning — clear water, sandy bottom, posidonia patches with bream and damselfish. Taverna Giorgos on the harbour does pougia — sun-dried octopus, cut into chewy strips and grilled.
