For most bareboat charters in Greece you need a recognised skipper certificate (RYA Day Skipper, ICC, or equivalent) plus a VHF licence. If you don’t hold one, we book a professional skipper alongside the boat for the week.
The base charter fee covers the boat, standard equipment, insurance, and final cleaning fee in most cases. Extras such as fuel, port fees, transit log, tourist tax and skipper service are billed separately and explained in the booking summary.
For peak weeks (mid-July to late August) we recommend booking 6–9 months ahead to lock in the boat and the early-bird discount. Shoulder seasons (May, June, September) usually have availability up to a month before departure.
The Saronic chain — Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses — sits within 50 nautical miles of Athens, making it the natural first week for charter guests flying into Athens and looking for moderate sailing. The Meltemi (Greece’s defining summer northerly) is weaker here than in the Cyclades — typically 12–18 knots from late June through August, versus the 25–35 knots routine in Mykonos waters.
Aegina is famous for its pistachios — the Aegina PDO — and the harbour-front market sells them by the kilo from August onward. The town’s seafood tavernas (Geladakis, Skotadis) serve grilled octopus and fresh tsipoura with a glass of retsina or, better, a dry Assyrtiko from Santorini. Distance from Athens (Lavrion or Alimos): 18–25 nm.
Hydra bans wheeled vehicles. The harbour town climbs a steep amphitheatre, with mules carrying provisions to upper houses. Sunset Bar above the harbour, Omilos for dinner, Gefyri for a quick lunch — these are the steady picks. The walk from the harbour to Vlychos beach takes 25 minutes along the coastal path; the swim is worth it.
Spetses is the wealthier sister to Hydra. Old Harbour (Palaio Limani) has a cluster of seafood restaurants — Tarsanas for the local marination of bonito (kavourmas), and Patralis for the more upscale fish menu. The island has bicycles for rent if you want to do the 25 km coastal loop.
Poros is the closest Saronic island to the mainland — a 200 m channel separates it from Galatas. Easy provisioning stop. Methana on the mainland side has a famous sulphur spa and a quiet marina that takes catamarans for an overnight (35–60 EUR).
A 7-day Saronic loop from Lavrion (about 60 km southeast of Athens, the standard charter base) typically runs: Lavrion → Aegina (pistachio market and Geladakis taverna) → Poros → Hydra (Vlychos walk) → Spetses (Old Harbour) → Ermioni or Hermione mainland → back. Distances range 12–30 nm per leg, comfortable Meltemi conditions.
